Canadian citizens

Your eligibility for citizenship depends on your situation, such as:

Spouses of Canadian citizens

You don’t automatically become a citizen when you marry a Canadian. If you’re a spouse of a Canadian citizen, you:

  • don’t need to meet any special requirements

  • must meet the same eligibility requirements as other adults

Proof of Canadian citizenship

Some people born outside Canada to a Canadian parent became citizens at birth.

Any Canadian citizen may apply for a citizenship certificate. A parent may apply on behalf of a minor (under 18 years old).

You should apply if you want to:

  • make sure that you are a Canadian citizen

  • get proof to show you are a Canadian citizen

  • replace a lost, destroyed or stolen certificate

  • update your certificate, such as when you get a legal name change
